Who We Are
From milk trucks to monorails—how one man’s produce stand turned into the wildest shopping experience on Earth.

Meet the Wizard of Odd. Yes, there is a real person behind the magic! James O. Bonaminio was born in 1949 in Lorain, Ohio, 30 miles outside of Cleveland. Fast forward to today and you can still find Jungle roaming the stores, expanding his closet of wizard robes, and breaking ground on new projects every day.

Before there was a jungle, there was just Jim—and a 1948 milk truck. Young Jim Bonaminio didn’t start with a storefront or investors. He started with hustle. A garage sale on wheels. Pillows. Carpet remnants. Golf balls. Anything he could sell, he did—out of a truck, on the move, with a dream too big for a driveway.

03
Legend has it, Jim’s leap from wheeler-dealer to produce prince began with 45,000 pounds of rejected potatoes. A less ambitious soul might’ve walked away. Jim? He turned it into a spectacle. A roadside sale. Lines of curious customers. Suddenly, “that guy with the truck” became “that guy who sells great produce.” Jungle Jim’s roots were officially planted.

After bouncing between borrowed parking lots and temporary setups, Jim found a sliver of land in Fairfield, Ohio. He didn’t have the full down payment, but a kind soul named Fanny Cunagin believed in the dream and co-signed the loan. Thanks to her, Jungle Jim’s had a forever home—and Fairfield had a future legend.

Cue the animatronics and oversized hot sauce bottles. In the early ’80s and ’90s, Jungle Jim’s exploded in both size and spirit. The “grocery store” grew from 3,000 square feet to 240,000 by 2001, with expansions that brought monorails, elephants, seafood boats, and aisles packed with international flair. Jim turned shopping into showtime—part market, part museum, part theme park.

Today, Jungle Jim’s is a world tour in grocery form. One part global food mecca, one part quirky wonderland, it’s stocked with products from over 70 countries—and personality in every corner. From award-winning restrooms to wine festivals and cooking classes, Jungle Jim’s isn’t just a place to shop. It’s a place to explore.
