History

Large crowds at The Weekend of Fire, the largest fiery food show in the Midwest.

The genesis for the Weekend of Fire started many years ago. We can trace it back over 15 years when ‘Jungle’ Jim Bonaminio thought it would be great for his customers to have access to the bounty of hot sauces out west. Back then, the only hot sauce available was Tobasco. He started traveling to some of the great shows and little by little we began to bring the flavor and the heat back east. We started a retail hot sauce department (under the fire truck in international) and now, years later, we stock over 1,400 hundred hot sauces; the largest retail selection in the country. So it was only a matter of time before we needed a “fiery food show” to expose more shoppers to the great sauces. Jungle wanted his customers to be able to try samples and meet the people behind the sauces.

From all that traveling, Jungle learned that the hot sauce community is made up of fun loving food and heat enthusiasts! And the Weekend of Fire, from the first year until now, has always been about interaction between our shoppers and the “chile heads” in the industry. With the advent of the internet, the bloggers have done a great job promoting the hot sauce culture and even helping get the word out about our fiery food show.

From our first show which had about 500 people, to last year’s show which had about 2,500 people, we have continued to improve the our fiery food show. Last year we added contests and that was huge! We didn’t know what to expect, but people loved them. All the contests were filled to the limits as contestants tried their hardest to win and a great crowd came to cheer them on.

This year we changed the date, which was a big ordeal because many of the vendors travel far and had to switch around their summer travel schedules just for our show. We moved the show to fall for two main reasons: first, we’ve almost outgrown The Oscar Event Center. And second, we wanted more food and local flare at the show so we added BBQ Alley, an outdoor element. With ribs, pizza, wings, deep-fried oreos and even funnel cakes, there will be lots of food you can choose from. We'll have deep-fried coneys, which is a hot dog with all the coney fixin's wrapped in a tortilla and deep-fried. Wait until you try this, it is delicious!

Along with the wild vendors, crazy booths and food enthusiasts this should be the best Weekend of Fire yet. See you there.
