Olive Oils
We all use olive oil - or know that we should. But do you know which olive oil to use for specific purposes?
Over 75 Olive Oil Brands and Varieties
Here at Jungle Jim's we carry over 75 olive oil brands/varieties. Yes, we have many different brands of extra virgin and pure olive oils. And just like cooking with wine, make sure you like the flavor of your olive oil before you use it. Different brands taste a little different, so if you like the olive oil you are using, stick with that brand.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra Virgin signifies the first cold press. It is the most flavorful olive oil you can buy and should only be used when you are not going to heat the oil as heat kills the flavor enzymes in the oil. Extra virgin could cost a little more - and the flavor is worth the cost – but not if you're going to heat the oil. Use extra virgin olive oil for salads, dressings and vinaigrettes. It's also good drizzled over slices of crusty bread or onto open-face sandwiches. Add a Mediterranean flair to your baked and mashed potatoes by using olive oil instead of butter.
Pure Olive Oil
Regular olive oil is produced by pressing the olives again using heat. With this second press, most of the olive flavor is gone so many times companies add extra virgin olive oil to give regular olive oil flavor. Use this whenever you are going to use heat.
Flavored Olive Oil
When you're looking for something new and different, try one of our flavored oils. There are at least 10 different flavored oils on our shelves, including White Truffle, Roasted garlic Rosemary and Basil. They are all great for salads, dressings and dipping/drizzling.
Light Olive Oil
Light olive oil refers to the taste, not the fat and calories.
Cooking with Olive Oil
Pure olive oil is good for sauteing, frying and even deep frying because it has a high smoke point (410 degrees).
