Indian Foods
Food in India has a wide range of variety, taste and flavor. Since the geography of this country is so diverse, each region has its own cuisine and style of preparation. The unique and strong flavors in Indian cooking comes from spices, seasonings and lots of nutritious, natural plants. A cuisine based on nutrition, not only are leafy vegetables, grains, fruits and legumes used frequently but most of the spices were originally chosen for their medicinal purposes – not for their flavor. Turmeric, cloves and cardamom are antiseptic and ginger is good for the digestion.

Indian food is categorized into five tastes – sweet, sour, salty, hot and bitter – and Indians like to have all five tastes in their mouths at one time. Because they use so many spices, grains, vegetables and fruit, this is easy to do. In the International Produce Department at Jungle Jim’s, you can get bitter melon to impart the bitterness needed, chilies for heat, etc. We have many products to choose from.
