Durian
The "King of Fruit," is one of the unusual produce you may find at Jungle Jim's. This Thailand specialty can only be found in a couple of stores in the United States. It has a creamy texture and is a great source of Vitamins B and C. However, one minor drawback to the Durian is it's smell - it has a very offensive odor that has been compared to garlic and Limburger cheese!Asian Pears
Crisp, grainy, sweet and juicy, the Asian Pear is appreciated the best when eaten fresh on its own, as other foods tend to mask its delicate flavor. It blends particularly well with cream cheese and yogurt.Ginger Root
Ginger root has a sweet, woodsy aroma with a creamy yellow flesh. When sliced into "coins," it gives an indirect flavor to dishes, while minced ginger root gives a stronger, more pungent flavor.Plantain Bananas
When green, they are excellent for frying or boiling, with a starchy texture & bland flavor. Ripe plaintain are a great addition to desserts when peeled & sliced, having a fruity aroma and a sweeter flavor.Jicama
Jicama gives the appearance of a large beige turnip, however, a jicama is a root similar to a potato. It makes a great appetizer - simply cut into slices, add lemon juice and cayanne pepper, or just dip into blue cheese dressing for a great treat.Papayas
With year-round availability, papayas are an ideal fruit for any occasion, anytime of year. This pear-shaped fruit with golden to orange flesh yields a sweet, tart, exotically tropical flavor. Papaya are ripe when they yield to gentle pressure. Use ripe papaya as soon as possible, as they ripen quickly at room temperature. Papaya is a great addition to mixed fruit bowls.
