Riedel Glassware
Riedel offers the finest instruments when it comes to enjoying wine and spirits. The extensive range is layered by sophistication and price category. Riedel glassware and decanters are the finest instruments for enhancing the enjoyment of wine and spirits. When developing a glass, Riedel's design ideas are not born on a drawing board, but shaped by trial and error with the help and support of the world's greatest palates. A person interested in wine is led by color, bouquet and taste, but often the glass is not considered as an instrument to convey the message of the wine. Over the years Riedel acquired some interesting scientific explanations as to why the shape of a glass influences the bouquet and taste of alcoholic beverages.
When the wine is poured, it immediately starts to evaporate and its aromas quickly fill the glass in layers according to their density and specific gravity. Consequently, the size and the shape of the glass can be fine-tuned to the typical aromas of a grape variety. The shape of the glass forces the head to position itself in such a way that you drink and do not spill. Wide, open glass shapes require us to sip by lowering the head, whereas a narrow rim forces the head to tilt backwards so that the liquid flows because of its gravity. This delivers and positions the beverage to different "taste zones" of the palate. For more information about Riedel wine glasses, please visit the official Riedel website.
Riedel Crystal History
Tradition and innovation - the Riedel company can proudly look back on its 250-year success story. From its beginnings in northern Bohemia down to this day, for 11 generations (for now) Riedel Glass has stood for the high art of glassmaking. In 1673, when Johann Christoph Riedel was born in the Bohemian town of Neuschloß, no one could have guessed that this was also the birth of one of the greatest glass enterprises in the world. The Riedel business was founded in 1756 in Bohemia and has been in the ownership of the same family ever since.
This Bohemian glass merchant was the starting point for a direct line through several generations down to today´s corporate head Georg J. Riedel and his son Maximillian. Each Riedel in this long chain has been able to contribute his personal skills and views to expand the company´s success and make it what it is today.
Ninth generation Riedel, Claus Riedel changed the world of wine with his revolutionary concept of functional stemware. He led the way for increased wine enjoyment. He was the first in history to recognize the effect of the shape of a glass on perception and drinking pleasure of alcoholic beverages Over 40 years ago he detected that the same wine tasted dissimilar out of different glasses.
Tenth generation Riedel, Georg Riedel further developed the concept. He discovered that the content commands the shape, whose consequence was: the correct choice of glass enhances the flavors of wines. The delivery of a wine's "message", its bouquet and taste, depends on the form of the glass. It is the responsibility of a glass to convey the wine's messages in the best manner to the human senses.
In his highly regarded wine journal, Robert M. Parker Jr. of The Wine Advocate, says. ’The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by the Riedel company. The effect of these glasses is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make.’
After tasting his wine from a Riedel glass, I never dreamed my wines were this good! -- Robert Mondavi
